INTRODUCTION
Bangkok – City Of Wonders
Bangkok combines centuries of a rich Buddhist culture with a modern western one that offers something for everyone whatever their age. It is a bustling modern city comparable to any in the world, yet it can also become a place of peace and tranquility. In this book I hope to show you the many delights that can be found in this huge, sprawling metropolis, from its beautiful parks and botanical gardens, to its zoo, swimming pools, canals, markets, temples and most importantly its amazing food. The topography of the city itself suffers from many decades of questionable town planning. It has grown outwards at massive speed due to increased prosperity with freeways netting together across urban areas. There is no ‘downtown’ Bangkok, though some might attribute this to the financial districts like Asok.
Upon my many flights into Bangkok from London I have always been amazed by the number of my fellow plane travellers that have no plans on arrival. It prompted me to write a short guide which has expanded into the book you see before you.
I have attempted to put the book into some kind of logical order, as it is for beginners or those who are unfamiliar with the city. So we begin at Savanabhumi International Airport, the traveller’s first view of Bangkok.
We then discuss accommodation. It is always daunting to arrive in a new city, particularly early evening without anywhere to stay. Bangkok is vast and you could end up many kilometres from the sights you are interested in. With our guide you will find a hotel in the best area for you and within your budget.
After you have found a hotel, we will tell you how to get around this huge city and what to see. Whether you are in Bangkok for one day or one week, we will show you how to utilise your time effectively.
We investigate the night life in Bangkok that is as exciting as day in a city that never sleeps. As food is the most important factor for Thai and foreigners alike, we point you in the right direction.
There are many areas outside the city that have significant importance. We include some short day trips and some that are longer. You, the reader, always have the end choice. We are here to give you the best advise from our years of experience. Enjoy.
